In August 2009 I spent a week in New Delhi and the surrounding areas, shooting an editorial for the special projects dept of the Hindustan Times. We profiled new owners and the families that had purchased the economical Tata Nano, considered the cheapest of all cars.

The stories are as varied as the indian subcontinent, from a farmer in Northern India named Satish that earns roughly 800€ per year tending to his 5 acres of wheat to a businessman running a large steel fabrication plant. Or a suburban family where all the children, Ankita, Arpita and Labhansh have pooled their monies along with that of the parents to make a first car purchase possible for the family. As mobility becomes a reality for a growing indian middle and lower class this is just the first chapter of the Tata Nano Story
